Q&A about BMX racing at North Bay BMX

On this page we've posted some basic questions and answers people have about how to get started in the sport of BMX racing. Let us know if there's something that w've left out or need to add. Your input is important!

Question: What do I need to get started in BMX racing?

There is no minimum age limit. Although the new and especially young rider should have a pretty good ability to ride a two wheeled bicycle. He/she should be able to negotiate turns and use the brakes effectively.

All riders must wear long pants, long sleeve shirts and a full face helmet to ride on our track. Gloves and other protective gear is recommended.

The bike must meet the following requirements: No refelctors, no pegs, no kickstands, good working brakes. The rider must be able to place both feet comfortably on the ground while fully seated with both hands on the handlebars. The bike needs to be in good mechanical condition.

Question: When can I ride the track?

Our hours of operation are always posted on the website's main page and calendar. When in doubt, call the hot line at 707-256-0269.

Riders are not allowed in the facility or on the track outside our regular hours of operation.

Question: How much does it cost?

There are a few things to consider here:

  1. The cost of your equipment. Start out with the basics: a decent, working bike and helmet. The rest can be added later. You can often find used gear at the track or online.
  2. Membership. Each rider will need an ABA membership. You can get a one day membership for $1, a 30 day membership for $25, or a one year membership for $45. Additional family members can be added for a slightly lower rate. Any level of membership can easily be handled at the track.
  3. Race day fees. Each day you race or practice you pay a nominal fee. Practice only is $3 to $5 and race fees are $7 to $10 depending on the day. Race fees include practice time. Multi-point and National race fees are from $20 to $65 depending on the venue.
Note: Having an active ABA membership allows you to ride and race at any ABA track in the US! Go to www.ababmx.com for more information.
Question: How can I help?

If you'd like to help then let us know! Each race and practice day we can use volunteers to help with sign ups, the snack bar, staging, track safety, and track maintenance. If you'd like to consider becoming a board member, see the "Track Information" page about open board seats.

Question: What is a "moto" or moto sheet?

A moto is a single race. Each moto that a rider competes in will consist of 2 or 3 "heats" and a "main event". You must qualify for the main event by placing high at the finish in your heats. Each rider will have 2 or 3 heats in which to try and qualify for the "main". The moto sheets are posted at each track once sign ups are complete and all data has been entered into the "moto maker" program. The moto sheet will have riders placed in moto's by age and skill level. The moto sheet will have the riders names, plate or bike number, your gate number for each heat and how many riders will qualify in each "heat". Learn to read the info on the moto sheet. If you're unsure, ask any track official or other BMX families at the track to explain what all the info on the moto sheet means. Make sure you pay attention to the moto's running order and have your racer back at the staging hill in pleanty of time for each heat.
